However – apart from its vastness, its phenomenal aquarium, and the variety of shops on offer – what I remember most from my first trip to Dubai Mall is that I spotted a 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series trundling around, looking for a parking spot.
I had seen these before, but only at an auto show. Seeing one in the wild (!!!) made it look much better, and among all the other exotic cars you see at a place like Dubai, the SL65 AMG Black Series stood out for me. From that moment, I became a fan of this model, and hence always keep an eye out for one in the used car market, just in case I win a big lottery and need to get one.
The unit listed at Driving Emotions in Florida would suit me just fine. This black on black example has covered just 3,780 miles (approx. 6,100 km), and is one of 175 units brought to the USA – total global production was limited to 350 units, from which I believe just three examples made it to Canada.
As you’d expect, this car is very well equipped, but what interests me is the performance. The SL65 AMG Black Series has a factory tuned version of the twin-turbocharged 6.0L V12 motor found in other Mercedes-Benz products, only here it produces 670 hp and 737 lb-ft of torque. All that oomph is fed to the rear wheels via a five-speed automatic gearbox – because, it was the only transmission in Merc’s catalog that could reliably handle this much power. As you’d expect, this is a fast car. Zero to 100 km/h is covered in just 3.8 seconds, while its top speed is electronically governed at 320 km/h.
To keep the car on the road, the SL65 AMG Black Series has a rear spoiler that rises as the speed climbs past 120 km/h. To also aid rigidity, the chassis and suspension were beefed up, and the retractable metal-roof was replaced by a fixed one.
One more reason I like this car is because most people on the road will dismiss it as just another M-B SL, which while a nice car, is quite a common sight in most metropolitan cities. The SL65 AMG Black Series will never be a common sight, because of its rarity, and will guaranteed be a future classic. The car pictured here is priced at $199,900.
