I was visiting my old friend, Leo Rubino, at Alfa Motorsports in Etobicoke, Ontario recently, when I spotted this in the showroom – a 1971 Fiat 850 Abarth.
While the humble Fiat 850 had to make do with just 34 hp, the Abarth version punched out 43 hp. Top speed was hence raised from 120 km/h to 130 km/h for the Abarth. If you really went all out and got its 847cc engine tuned to Oltre 150 spec, then you got 52 hp and a top speed of 150 km/h. That is a lot for a car that probably offers less safety than a sardine can
So, you’re not likely to buy it for top speed thrills, so why should anyone buy one? Well, the 850 Abarth, thanks to its rear-engine layout, is known to be quite an entertainer on a twisting, winding road.
I think it is also quite a good looking car. It’s cute and tiny, with just a hint of aggression thrown in thanks to the Abarth treatment. This car will surely get you attention anywhere you go, and will make you a star at most car meets.
